When James Dobson Interviewed a Serial Killer
Just 15 hours before serial killer Ted Bundy’s execution, Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, walked into Florida State Prison and recorded a controversial interview.
This week on the Preacher Boys Podcast, I talk about the true crime rabbit hole I went down where I discovered this fact for the first time and my feelings about it.
I also invited true crime author and Bundy historian Kevin M. Sullivan to join me and go a bit deeper into the interview and the events surrounding it at the time.
We also discuss…
Why Dobson’s portrayal of Bundy was so influential in shaping evangelical attitudes about sin, lust, and violence
Why Bundy’s “pornography defense” doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.
The most accurate film about Ted Bundy.
If you’re fascinated by true crime, religion, or both this episode is for you.

The whole "Christians defending serial killers" thing is gobsmacking - right now I have literally HUNDREDS of Adventists in my social media comment sections rabidly defending Robert Lee Yates, who was a Seventh-Day Adventist Elder and life-long SDA church member. OH BOY can they hear NOTHING bad about him - "everyone's sinful" "nobody's perfect, even you" etc etc. Mormons defend Bundy, evangelicals defend Dahmer...it's CRAAAAAZY.
Always wondered why those who “hate sexual sin” are drawn to study it. Eg: fundie pastor makes deliberate attempt to visit red light district of Vegas.
